As a parent of a childhood cancer patient and survivor, we strive every September to promote the fact that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It is represented by a gold ribbon. Last Friday, the Opelika City School administration, Opelika High School football team, cheerleaders, faculty, and staff took our mission to a completely different level by recognizing Childhood Cancer Awareness at the pep rally. There were touching presentations and recognitions honoring two cancer patients at Opelika High School, my daughter Carly, and classmate Lexi. These two strong, inspirational survivors were surprised at the pep rally with admiration and support from the entire student body, cheerleaders, football players, coaches and the school system faculty and administration. The most humbling, and inspiring moment was seeing the whole student body, swaying arm in arm to the song Stand (by Rascal Flatts) as a show of unity and support for these girls, something that Opelika represents.
This expression of love and support from Opelika High School should be praised and recognized as a symbol of everything that is represented with the Opelika educational system, community and city. My family respects this quality and appreciates the prayers and support that are provided as we, and all childhood cancer patients, continue our battle for complete healing. This is what makes Opelika great and makes us proud to be members of the Opelika school system and community.
