Starting the season 1-2, the Lee-Scott Varsity Boys basketball team got its second win of the season last week against Clarke Prep and followed that up with a narrow loss to Edgewood on Monday night.
Sophomore guard Hutch Sprayberry led the way in the Nov. 24, 74-61, win over Clarke Prep. Lee-Scott jumped out to an early, 25-17 lead, and pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Clarke Prep 19-10 in the period. Sprayberry played all but five minutes and scored 26 points on 9/17 shooting. Senior center Carson Alexander was second in scoring (11) and second in rebounds (6). And bruising in the paint alongside Alexander was sophomore Joseph Horne, who led the Warriors with seven rebounds and was the third player to reach double figures on the night, adding 10 points.
After the Thanksgiving break, the boys returned home to take on Edgewood on Monday. Edgewood entered the game in the same position Lee-Scott were in last week – looking for their first win of the season. The game started with a highly-contested first quarter, with Lee-Scott taking a 12-11 lead into the second period. The next two quarters heavily favored either side, with Edgewood outscoring LSA 19-7 in the second, and LSA outscoring Edgewood 12-6 in the third. Going into the fourth quarter LSA trailed 36-31. Led by Alexander – who finished with 19 points and 7 – Lee Scott put up their highest single-quarter point total in the fourth, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Lee Scott fell to Edgewood in a nail bitter, 51-45.
Alexander was the only Lee-Scott player to finish with double digits, as the team struggled as a whole, shooting just 29.5% from the field on the night. The Warriors desperately missed Sprayberry’s scoring, as the sophomore guard had an off night, making just two of his 12 field goals. Despite the cold shooting, Lee-Scott were able to keep the game close by turning Edgewood over 25 times compared to only 15 turnovers for themselves. However, in the end, Edgewood shot the ball just well enough (42.9%) and cleaned up the rebounds when they missed – outrebounding LSA 43-33.
The split of their last two games moves Lee-Scott to 2-3 in the early dawn of this season. Lee-Scott played Pike Liberal Arts (1-1) on Tuesday night, but the results were not available at press.
