Lee County Humane Society (LCHS) is in desperate need of pet fosters and funding during its Summer of Second Chances 2021 campaign. Puppy and kitten season is upon us and LCHS is maxed out for kennel space. In order for our shelter to maintain a live release rate or positive outcome of 95% or above, we must find foster homes for our homeless pets. In July, LCHS took in 263 pets and was able to get 252 pets out of the shelter. To keep the positive outcomes going, we need community support.
Fostering doesn’t just save the life of the pet you take home. It makes a kennel available for the next homeless pet taken in. Fosters can take home a pet for as little as one night. For those who don’t have time during the workweek, we also offer a Weekend Warrior foster program. Weekend Warriors pick up a foster pet on Friday and drop them off Monday morning before work so that you only have the pet for the weekend. Summer of Second Chances is an annual LCHS fundraiser with a goal of $50,000. So far, we have raised just over $28,000 and have until Aug. 31 to meet our goal. These funds allow our shelter to care for each and every pet that comes through our doors, so it is more important than ever that we reach $50,000. It costs LCHS $20.69 per pet, per day they are in our care. With over 200 pets in our shelter on a daily basis, that is a minimum cost of $4,138 per day just for basic care.
