LaVerne Taylor Flanagan 1927-2012

LaVerne Taylor Flanagan died Jan. 2, 2012, after a brief illness. Born in Hattiesburg, Miss. on April 22, 1927. She moved to Mobile, where she attended Murphy High School and received the English Honors Award at graduation. She graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1948. While there she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta, serving as Treasurer. Flanagan was also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Lambda Sigma, Cardinal Key, Mortise Board, Phi Kappa Phi, and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. She was president of the women’s student government and on the executive committee of API student government. She married James Adam Flanagan, the great-grandson of one of the pioneer families of Lee County.

They lived in a number of places while Jim was in the U.S. Army including four years in Giessen, Germany. While living in Germany, Flanagan was president of the Giessen Officers Wives Club and served as the chairman of the protestant women of the chapel conference for women from all over Europe and Northern Africa held in Garmisch, Germany.
