Helen C. Dennis

 

Helen C. Dennis was born January 19, 1940 and passed away June 15, 2014. She was 74 years old.

Mrs. Dennis was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Louie Frank Butts, Joe Edwin Butts, and Tulles Winfred Butts.

She is survived by her husband, James Dennis; children, Tracy Underwood (Walt), Tommy Dennis (Kim), Christie Berry (Darren), and Brandon Dennis; grandchildren, David Morris, Dustin Berry, Dana Dennis; sister, Ethel B. Hendry of Columbus, GA; and brother, Johnny Windell Butts (Rachel) of Panama City Beach, FL; sister in law, Deloris Butts; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 from 5:00-7:00 PM CST, in the parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home. Funeral service was Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at 10:00 AM CST, in the chapel at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home, with Reverends Eric Hilyer, Walt Underwood, and Tommy Howze officiating.

Dr. Harold O. Beals

 

Dr. Harold Oliver Beals, age 82, was born on July 4, 1931 in Mishawaka, Indiana and died on June 10, 2014 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Opelika.

He is predeceased by his parents, Colonzo Chelice and Glendora Scudder Beals; twin brother, Dr. Garold Scudder Beals; sister, Janet Beals Norlin; and brother, Robert C. Beals.

Dr. Beals was educated in Edwardsburg, Michigan, Owyhee, Nevada and Mulberry, Indiana.  He attended Purdue University and received a B.S.F. degree in 1955, an M.S. degree in 1957, and the Ph.D. degree in 1960 from Purdue.  He was a member Sigma Xi, Xi Sigma Pi and others.  He taught Forest Products courses and did research at Auburn University from 1960 until his retirement in 1993.  Dr. Beals was an original founder of Evans Drum Heads with his brother, Robert C. Beals, Lawrence Drehmer and M.L. Evans.

He served as a consultant in musical instrument manufacturing and the forest products industry.  He also served as an expert witness in legal matters.  He is listed in American Men of Science and other biographies.

Dr. Beals is survived by his wife, Mildred; step-son, Walter LaClede Beals from a previous marriage; two nieces, Janalee Skinner and Barbara Roberts; three grandchildren, Tonya, Alyssa and Russell; as well as Beals, Mendenhall, and Scudder cousins.

Funeral service was held on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. in the Chapel at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home.  Interment will follow in Little Texas Cemetery. Visitation was held prior to the service from 1:30 until the service hour. The family would like to express their special thanks to caregivers Sandra Gates and Latoya Russell who have been so helpful to the family.

Edna Earl Adams Meadows

 

Edna Adams Meadows, 94, of Opelika passed away Sunday, June 8, at Golden Living of Lanett. She was born May 15, 1920 in Hartford, Alabama to the late Charlie and Nancy Adams. Edna was married August 1940 to the late Ruel Brady Meadows. She loved spending time and cooking for her family, as well as traveling with the church’s KIT Club.

Edna is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, Rhilla (Lewis) Raines, Lillian (Clayton) Bynum, Hilda (Atlas) Nichols, Velma (Houston) Thomas, Margaret (Bob) Boutwell, Nellie Adams, P.J. Adams, Huey (Estel) Adams, and Huce Adams.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Claudie Adams; son, Larry Ruel (Lisa) Meadows, of Opelika; granddaughter, Toni Meadows Bobyarchick, of Auburn; grandson, Rowdy Matt (Karen) Meadows, of Opelika; great grandsons, Ruel Brady Meadows, Jacob Wayne Bobyarchick, Matthew Lucas Bobyarchick; great granddaughter, Mackenzie Ann Meadows; and special nieces, Helen Thomas Peters Chalker and Barbara Nichols Slay Perryman.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home. Interment followed at Garden Hills Cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from 12:45 PM until 1:45 PM in the parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home.

Arlene Johnson Carpenter

 

Mrs. Arlene Johnson Carpenter, 89, was born on June 22, 1924, in Randolph County, AL and passed away on June 8, 2014 at Arbor Springs in Opelika. Mrs. Carpenter was a resident of the Opelika and Auburn area since 1985.

Mrs. Carpenter retired in 1983, after 24 years as a Buyer for Wakefield’s Department Store in Anniston, AL.  She was a former member of First Christian Church in Anniston and an active member of Opelika First United Methodist Church.  She was also a member and past president of Strickland Sunday School Class, the Joy Fellowship devotional leader, a Congregational Care Chairperson, a member of the Mother’s Study Club, a Charter Member of 55 Plus, a volunteer for EAMC for 20 years and a volunteer at Opelika Health Care for 8 years.

Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by her parents, Shelley and Luna Murphy Johnson; her husband, James Davis Carpenter; her sister, Evelyn Johnson Williams; her infant son, Kenneth Arlin Carpenter; and her son, Bill W. Carpenter.

She is survived by her son, Randell (Deborah) Carpenter of Opelika, AL; her daughter, Charlotte (Ronny) Phillips Koon of Helena, AL; her sister, Deane Albright of Anniston, AL; her grandchildren, Morgan (Connie) Carpenter, David (Melissa) Carpenter, Jeff (Emily) Carpenter, Kara (David) Jansen, Bryan Carpenter, Bradley (Krystal) Carpenter, Matt (Jill) Phillips, Russ (April) Phillips; great grandchildren, Lauren (Donald) Yost, Scot and Kelcie Carpenter, Seth and Zach Carpenter, Christopher and Jayden Jansen, Hailey, Daniel, Dyllon and Kimberly Carpenter, and Blake and Sarah Phillips; her daughter-in-law, Anne Carpenter; former daughter-in-law, Lynn Harrington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home, with Rev. Randy Woodham and Chaplain Paul Greger officiating.

A Graveside Service was held at 3:00 PM at Forest Lawn Gardens in Anniston, AL with Rev. Laura Hutchinson officiating.

Visitation was held Tuesday, June 10, 2014 from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM in the Parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home.

Flowers will be accepted or donations to the Opelika First United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Lauren Elizabeth Kirkley

 

Lauren Elizabeth Kirkley, 30, of Auburn, passed away Friday, June 13, 2014, while visiting in Denver, CO. She was born in Mobile, Alabama April 27, 1984.

Lauren was a devout believer in our Lord Jesus Christ. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Lauren was preceded in death by her grandmother, Nell Kirkley and grandfather, Billy Kirkley.

She is survived by fiancé, Trent Pearson; her parents, George and Susan Konstant and Steve and Pam Kirkley; her sister, Savannah Kirkley, her brothers, Jordan Kirkley, John Konstant, David Konstant, and Thomas George Konstant;  her grandparents, John and Louise Robinson and Gus and Evelyn Konstant; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Auburn. Reverend Gary Spooner officiated. Burial was held in Town Creek Cemetery.

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 18, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a Lauren Kirkley Memorial Fund through Covenant Presbyterian Church for Romanian orphans and mercy needs in the community.
