Special to the
Opelika Observer

The Genealogical Society of East Alabama will hold it’s quarterly meeting on Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Museum of East Alabama, which is located at 121 S. 9th St. in Opelika.
The guest speaker will be James P. Pate, who is an emeritus professor of history at the University of West Alabama, where he served as professor, department chair, dean and vice president of academic affairs during a 30-year period.
Pate will be speaking on “The Annotated Pickett’s History of Alabama: And Incidentally of Georgia and Mississippi, From the Earliest Period.”
First published in 1851, Albert James Pickett’s History of Alabama is one of the most notable publications on the state’s history. This new addition, annotated by historian James P. Pate, is the first to provide general readers and scholars with a hardbound, fully-indexed version of the two-volume original. During his presentation, Pate will discuss the process of editing and annotating this tome of Alabama history during the last two decades.
Admission is free and the public is invited.
