The Opelika Police Department is excited to announce its Together Opelika “Game On” Flag Football event featuring current and former professional and collegiate athletes. Boys and girls ages 5 to 18 are invited to participate in a day of flag football at Opelika High School on Saturday, June 19. Special guests include Tennessee Titans Linebacker Rashaan Evans, Cincinnati Bengals Cornerback Tony Brown and former Jacksonville Jaguars Running Back Corey Grant. Opelika Police officers, along with collegiate athletes from the University of Alabama, will be coaching teams of eight kids which will be divided up into four age groups.
Children will have the opportunity to meet the athletes, have their photo taken and participate in a game of flag football. Registration is free and includes a t-shirt and lunch for each player. The day will conclude with a water balloon fight with the athletes and police. Parents can register their children online at www.opelikagameon.eventbrite.com.
The event is open to the public with the festivities kicking off at 9 a.m. Donations will be collected at admission for the Ambassadors of Change organizations which includes the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County, The Curtis House, The Knee High Foundation, Girls S.T.E.P.S Inc. and the Dream Day Foundation. The Ambassadors of Change Council was formed as a way for citizens to come together to collaborate and coordinate their efforts to help affect change in the community. Local vendors will also be available for attendees to purchase food at the event.
“This is a great opportunity for our officers to engage with the kids in our community in a different way,” said Police Chief Shane Healey. “We are fortunate to have some amazing athletes and organizations coming out to help us make this event a success.”
The Together Opelika “Game On” event is in partnership with Opelika High School, The city of Opelika, Opelika Fire Department, Lee County Emergency Management and the Razor Foundation. More information can be found online at www.opelika-al.gov/868/Game-On-Flag-Football.
