Glen Hubert Davis 1944-2012

 

A funeral service for Glen Hubert Davis, 68, of Opelika was held at 3 p.m. on June 21, 2012 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Reverends David Warren and Earl Ballard officiated. Burial was held in Garden Hills Cemetery. Visitation was held Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home.

Davis was born Jan. 31, 1944, in Opelika. He passed away on June 18, 2012 at Columbus Specialty Hospital in Columbus, Ga. He had been a lifelong resident of Opelika. He was retired from the Opelika Police Department with 20 years service, nine years as a lieutenant. He had been an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he enjoyed being a part of the Sunday School program. Glen was an avid fisherman, camper and traveler who also enjoyed talking about his Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara Taylor Davis of Opelika; two sons, Glen H. (Jamie) Davis, Jr. of Reeltown, Michael C. Davis of Opelika, six grandchildren, Drew, Kayla, Brianna, Michaela, Greg and Ethan Davis; two brothers, Phil (Diane) Davis of Columbus, Ga., David (Anne) Davis of Opelika; two special nephews, Jeff and Jon Davis both of Macon, Ga.; and other nieces and nephews.

Elouise Carson Young 1920-2012

 

Elouise Carson Young passed away on June 16, 2012. She was born on Nov. 17, 1920, in Liberty, Kan., she moved to Opelika in 1984 where she lived until her death.

Elouise had many experiences in her 91 plus years and was loved and will be missed by many. She grew up during the Great Depression, the youngest of seven siblings, which made her forever resourceful.

In December of 1941, at the start of World War II, she moved to Washington D.C. and eventually joined the U.S. Coast Guard which took her to California and Florida. Later she returned to the Washington D.C. area where she met and married Clarence William Young who preceded her in death in 1974. They are survived by two children, Steven Carson Young (Elaine) of Lancaster, Penn. and Lesa Joyce Yeatts (Orion) of Newport News, Va.

Mrs. Young had a lifelong interest in the outdoors and nature and served as secretary of the Opelika Garden Club for many years. In her earlier years, she loved to travel and had many memorable adventures with family and friends both here and abroad.

She will always affectionately be known as Mom, Grand Mom or Great Grand Mom to her two children, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Friends called her “Weezie.”

Elouise’s family sincerely thanks her many friends and church family for the care, companionship and love throughout these many years. She lived a rich and happy life.

A chapel service was held on June 21 at 10 a.m. at the Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home.

Fay Ruth Ganus Lord 1929-2012

 

Ruth Ganus Lord, 83, of Dothan, formerly of Opelika, died on Thursday, June 14, at Wesley Manor Nursing Home in Dothan. She was born on Jan. 30, 1929, in Covington County.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on June 16, at the chapel of Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home and Crematory in Opelika. The Rev. Eugene McCarley officiated.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time.

Lord was preceded in death by her husband, Talmage M. Lord, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel D. Ganus, two brothers, Rufus Edward Jennings and Rance Clinton Jennings and two sisters, Flora Belle Williams and Nezzie Mezel Gainey.

Survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law all of Dothan, Talice Lord Mullen (Bill) and Rulene Lord Manuel (Michael); four grandchildren, Tamara (Jason) Smith of Dothan, Lesley (Trent) Thornell of Ft. Payne, Jared M. Manuel and Derek M. Manuel of Dothan; eight great-grandchildren, Wesson Thornell, Blake Thornell, Chase Thornell, Clara Thornell, Elaine Thornell, Evelyn Smith, Lydia Smith, William Smith;  brother, Daniel “Pete” Ganus, of Opelika and sister-in-law, Edna Jennings VanBrunt of Huntsville; nieces and nephews.

Lord retired from the City of Opelika as an administrative assistant in the Public Works Dept.  She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Opelika and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Dothan.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to any church or organization to spread the Gospel of Christ or for Parkinson’s research made to UAB Department of Neurology, Tom Brannan,  SC 350E, 1530 3rd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294-0017.

Jean Catherine Ekdahl 1947-2012

 

Jean Catherine Ekdahl, age 65, was born in Pennsylvania on Jan. 10, 1947, and died on June 19, 2012, at Oak Park Nursing Home in Auburn.
