The city of Smiths Station will hold its annual “MLK Citywide Clean-Up Day” on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021.

This annual event is held to commemorate the service and legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. by cleaning up roadside trash. There is a need for volunteers, and those who wish to participate can sign up by calling 334-560-2034 or filling out a form online at www.smithsstational.gov under the “Upcoming Events” tab.

At 9 a.m. EST, Mayor F. L. “Bubba” Copeland and the city council will welcome volunteers before organizing into groups and starting the cleanup. All necessary supplies, including gloves, grabbing tools, masks and trash bags, will be provided, courtesy of Keep Alabama Beautiful. The cleanup is expected to last until 11:30 a.m. and volunteers will return to the Smiths Station Government Center, where they will receive a free lunch.

“Each year during this cleanup, our goal is to honor Mr. King’s memory by making Smiths Station a healthier and cleaner place to live. We’re excited to host and lead these efforts once again,” Copeland said.
