Special to the
Opelika Observer

The city of Opelika and the Opelika Environmental Services Department are excited to rollout a new recycling campaign in hopes to grow local recycling participation and encourage citizens to ‘Recycle Right’ in Opelika.
As part of the campaign, a new superhero is flying into town. Captain R2O (Recycle Right Opelika) is strong enough to take on stinky garbage, determined enough to teach everyone how to recycle right and handsome enough to win your hearts. His motto is, “when in doubt, throw it out!”
The city offers two ways to recycle: curbside and recycling center. Curbside is the most convenient way to recycle and it’s picked up every other week. This service is offered to Opelika citizens at only $10 a month with your first two months free.
Opelika has two full-service recycling centers on Jeter Avenue and 8th Avenue.
During the last year, the city has upgraded its recycling center on 8th Avenue to also accept appliances, electronics, glass, used cooking oil, batteries, tires and paint.
For more information, on service days and hours make sure to visit www.opelika-al.gov/729/Recycle-Right-Opelika.
“Recycling volume is up at our centers and we are now at more than 1,000 curbside recycling customers. This is great news, but we can always do more. Contamination continues to be a problem, so we are working to communicate what and where citizens can recycle,” said Opelika Environmental Services Director Terry White.
In an effort to clean up our beautiful city and help educate our citizens, Captain R20 and Opelika Environmental Services employees will be making appearances at various community organizations, schools and neighborhoods.
Look for more information in the coming months on our social media pages, website and in the paper. To have Captain R2O visit your organization, or for more information, contact the Community Relations Department at 334-705-5136.
