Backpack International had a very successful kickoff to the Holiday edition of its Drive Thru Meal Program.

Despite the pouring rain, there was a huge turnout. There were between 40-50 cars that day. People arrived as early as 3 p.m., even though the organization didn’t start serving until 4 p.m.

Since Auburn University is closed for the holiday, Backpack International was unable to obtain meals through Campus Kitchen.

That’s when the organization reached out to small businesses to help it out. And they stepped up in a big way. Within two weeks of us expressing need, Backpack International’s prayers were answered. The generosity by the community and beyond was overwhelming. Each week a different business will sponsor the meals. The meals will be prepared by Arif & Jennifer Kor of Greens & Beans, a local small business, who was also impacted by to COVID-19. It really is a beautiful project of all of us working together to make a difference in our community.

And these business are even planning to help Backpack International serve the community at its Drive Thru. Many will don holiday apparel while giving out meals. There will be holiday-themed music playing and maybe even some carolers. Aubie might even make an appearance.

The following businesses should be applauded for their generosity:

1. Nov 25: Blacks in Nonprofits, Minnie’s

Food Pantry & National Nonprofit

Minority Association

2. Dec 2: Women in Business

3. Dec 9: University Ace

4. Dec 16: Roots Real Estate

5. Dec 23: Travis Carswell Allstate

6. Dec 30: Prewett Pest

7. Jan 6: Moores Mill Animal Hospital

8. Jan 13: Behind the Glass (Donna Young)

Backpack International will be distributing meals every Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. at 555 Old Stage Road in Auburn. Meals will be given on a first come first served basis or until supplies last.

These are delicious and nutritious meals. This week will have mac & cheese, chicken and homemade yeast rolls.

If anyone would like to contribute beverages and desserts, Backpack International would love to make it a complete meal.

Donations can be made on the organization’s website (www.backpackinternational.org.)
