From staff reports

Chief Paul Register of the Auburn Police Department has confirmed that two individuals were shot and seriously injured in the parking lot of Auburn Mall earlier this evening.

“Our officers responded to the parking lot and we did locate two individuals who had injuries consistent with gunshot wounds,” Register said of the shooting, which occurred strictly outside of the building.

Latonia Darby and Katie Dawson were some of the first people on the scene shortly after the shooting occurred. Dawson said she crafted her own tourniquet from materials from both her and Darby’s cars to apply pressure to one of the victim’s wounds until emergency services arrived 10 minutes later.

Register said that the department believes that this situation, which was not a random act of violence, is neither active nor ongoing. Both victims were transported by helicopter to Columbus for treatment. No other details are available at this time. Check the City of Auburn’s Police Department website for updates.
