Christmas in a Backpack begins with packing parties

Christmas in a Backpack will look a little different this year. Due to COVID-19, Backpack International had to suspend its community-wide event. Last year, volunteers from all over Lee County gathered and helped pack 600 backpacks for kids in East Alabama, Guyana and Belize. Although the community can’t gather in a large group this year, there are still safe alternatives to give back to others.

This year, Backpack International is hosting private packing parties for groups. This is a wonderful opportunity for a small/youth group, staff, family or any group to participate in a service project. The organization is now booking parties for groups with a maximum of 10 people. Although this is a volunteer opportunity, Backpack International is asking for a minimum donation of $5 per person. The organization will provide homemade baked goods and hot cocoa/tea/cider/coffee. It is also asking people to donate supplies such as bath towels, deodorant, toothpaste and toys or stuffed animals.

Last week, Backpack International hosted its first party with a small group from Connect Church in Opelika. In two hours, this group managed to pack 75 backpacks for children in East Alabama, Guyana and beyond. It will be interesting to see how many backpacks the community can pack this season.
