As summer comes to an end and children everywhere return to the classroom, it is important for drivers to be aware of school buses on the way to their destinations.
Following are excerpts from Alabama Code Title 32, which provides safety precautions and conduct for drivers near school buses:
• The driver of a vehicle meets from either direction any school bus which has stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging any school children on a highway, roadway, school property, or private road shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or is signaled by the bus driver to proceed or the visual signals are no longer actuated.
• The driver of a vehicle upon a divided highway having four or more lanes which permits at least two lanes of traffic to travel in opposite directions does not stop the vehicle upon meeting a bus which is stopped in the opposing roadway.
• If the driver of any vehicle is witnessed by a peace officer or the driver of the school bus to have violated this section and the identity of the vehicle is no otherwise apparent, it shall be an interference that the person in whose name such vehicle is registered committed the violation.
