Dr. Douglass (Dougie) Kirk Macintire went home to be with her Lord on Dec. 27, 2011, after a Christmas where she had been surrounded by family and friends who love her. Born in Orange, N.J. in 1951, she spent her childhood in York, Pa. and Orange, N.J. She went to Denison University in Ohio, where she met her future husband, Marc Macintire.

Dougie graduated with honors from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine. After receiving her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, she completed an internship at Louisiana State University and a residency at Auburn University. She was an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and then returned to Auburn University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. Her accolades and publications in her field are too numerous to mention.

Dougie was indeed a wonderful friend, wife, and mother. She will be most remembered for her Christian spirit and the time she invested in others. She was active in three churches: Lakeview Baptist Church (member), First Presbyterian Church in Opelika, and The Carpenter’s Shop. Dr. Macintire was also active in the Christian Veterinary Fellowship at Auburn University. Her sweet spirit, grace, wisdom and unfettered love for others and deep love for Jesus will continue to inspire others long after her all too brief time with us. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.
