Hardy Shumate, Jr. 1919-2012

 

Hardy Shumate, Jr., of Opelika, was born on Aug. 15, 1919, in Thomaston, Ga. and passed away on March 11, in Huntsville, at Tutt Fann Veteran’s Home. He was 92 years old. He was a member of Pepperell Baptist Church in Opelika. He served as a medic during WWII and retired from West Point Pepperell after 20 plus dedicated years.

He is survived by his brother, W. J. Shumate; his daughter, Liz Shumate; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held on March 13, at 1 p.m. at Garden Hills Cemetery, Dr. Tom Tippett officiated.

Walter Bill Haywood, Sr. 1937-2012

 

Walter Bill Haywood, Sr., of Opelika, was born on Aug. 19, 1937, in Society Hill, and died on March 5, at Bethany House in Auburn. He was 74 years old. He was of the Baptist faith.

Haywood was preceded in death by his mother and father, Bessie Fay Gossett and Jessey Carson Legear; and his wife, Mary Ellen Kenney Haywood.  He is survived by his daughter, Malinda Johnson; son, Walter Bill Haywood, Jr. and wife Lisa; daughter, Anna Marlene Powell and husband Wes; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters and many friends.

A funeral service was held on March 8, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at Fredericks Funeral Home. Dr. Rusty Sowell officiated. Interment followed at Garden Hills Cemetery.

Visitation was held on March 7, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Fredericks Funeral Home.

Lula Meedie Culver Hillyer 1923-2012

 

Lula Meedie Culver Hillyer, of Geneva, was born in Coosa County on March 19, 1923, and passed away on March 9, at her home. She was 88 years old. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Hillyer was preceded in death by her parents, William Greer Culver and Rosa Scroggins Culver; her husband, Marcus Herbert Hillyer; sisters, Laura Thrash, Agnes Rudolph and Peggy Culver; and brothers, Greer Culver, Judson Culver and David Culver.

She is survived by her son, William Hillyer and wife Shirley; daughters, Rosemary Nelson and husband Dale Sr., Patsy Hawley and husband John, and Connie Matthews and husband Richard; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held today, March 16, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Fredericks Funeral Home, with Dr. Rusty Sowell officiating. Interment will follow in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11 a.m.

Mary J. Prestridge 1942-2012

 

Mary J. Prestridge, of Lafayette, was born on June 22, 1942, in Gainesville, Fla. and passed away on March 8, at Bethany House in Auburn. She was a member of North Central Baptist Church in Gainesville.

Prestridge is survived by her husband, Robert W. Prestridge; her son, Robert L. Prestridge and his wife Linda; her daughter, Mary Barclay; her son, Luke Prestridge and his wife Amanda; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on March 11, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Fredericks Funeral Home. Rev. Aaron Pruitt officiated. Interment followed in the Cusseta Community Cemetery.

Visitation was held prior to the service from noon until the funeral hour at 2 p.m.
