Kathleen Moore Chapman

Kathleen Chapman, a long time resident of Opelika, passed away in her home on Thursday, July 23, 2014. Mrs. Chapman is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Herman Chapman, parents and six siblings. She is survived by daughter, Sheree (Mel) York; sons: Steve (Deana), and Stan all of Birmingham; nine grandchildren: Sara (Greg) Smith, Drew , Kalyn, Allie, Neeley, Parker (Lane), Abbey, Hollan and Colby Chapman and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Chapman began her law enforcement career with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in 1966 as a Deputy Clerk. During the next 33 years, she rose to the position of lieutenant before retiring in 1999. Eighteen of those years were served with her husband, Sheriff Herman Chapman. Although active in numerous church, civic and community organizations, Mrs. Chapman is best known as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. An avid Auburn fan, she was lovingly called “Gram” by all friends and family who enjoyed football weekends together.

Visitation was Monday, July 28, at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services were Tuesday, July 29, 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Opelika with the Rev. Steve Scoggins officiating. Visitation at the church was held one hour prior to the service with graveside service following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Church Opelika Children’s Building Fund, 301 South 8th Street, Opelika, AL 36801 or perform a random act of kindness in your community.
