Virginia G. “Ginny” Dukas

 

Funeral service for Virginia G. “Ginny” Dukas, 86, of Opelika was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Jeffcoat-Trant Chapel. The Rev. Scott Dukas officiated. Burial was held in Rosemere Cemetery. Visitation was Saturday one hour prior to the service at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dukas passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at Wedowee Hospital. She was born July 6, 1927, in Opelika. She was a lifelong resident of Opelika. She worked as a nurse at Lee County Hospital (EAMC) and retired with 30 years service. She attended Liberty Grove Congregational Methodist Church when in Woodland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank R. Dukas in 1999. Ginny and Frank owned and operated the Corner Café in Opelika for 25 years. She was an avid animal lover and had numerous pets.

Mrs. Dukas is survived by daughter, Janis ‘Sissy” (Larry) O’Hara of Opelika; son, Bob (Rebecca) Dukas of Woodland; three grandchildren, Scott and Jamie Dukas, and Candy Wilhite Lanier; and six great-grandchildren.

Thomas Clinton (Clint) Hurd Jr.

 

Thomas Clinton (Clint) Hurd Jr., passed away at EAMC on Sunday, July 6, after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Thomas Clinton and Lydia Finklea Hurd, born on March 29, 1933, in Brewton.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Opelika First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Randy Woodham officiating. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m.  Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Jeffcoat-Trant  Funeral Home.

He attended T.R. Miller High School before moving to Atmore, where he graduated from Escambia County High School in 1951. In 1955, Clint graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) with a B.S. in Pharmacy. He was a talented musician and played in the Auburn University Band and Honor Band. His love and appreciation for music was second only to his family and profession. He was a member of ATO fraternity.

He earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Medical College of Alabama in Birmingham in 1959. Dr. Hurd completed a rotating Internship at University Hospital & Hillman Clinic in 1960.

He served his country as a captain in the U.S. Army in Teagu, Korea, from 1960-1961 and Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colo., 1961-62. It was there that he met and married Rose Anne Hasse and moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where Dr. Hurd began an OB/GYN Residency. His second year Residency was completed at University Hospital & Hillman Clinic, Birmingham. The third year Residency rotation was at Mobile General Hospital, and upon completion he was hired as Acting Director of Medical Education. Dr. Hurd was Certified by American Board of OB/GYN and Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

In 1968 Dr. Hurd joined his medical school classmate, Dr. Steve Russell, in the only OB/GYN practice in Opelika. He served Lee County Hospital (EAMC) as Chief of Staff from 1975-76 and served on the Executive Committee for several years. During the next 12 years he delivered approximately 2,000 babies and then set up a solo gynecology practice for the next 18 years. He proudly followed the Hippocratic Oath in all phases of the care he gave to every woman, mother and baby, regardless of race or financial status. He appreciated the nurses and hospital personnel who served him and his patients.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Poe-Cumbie SS Class. Friends and family agree he was truly a kind, loving, caring and witty “Southern Gentleman.”

Survivors include wife, Rose Anne; daughter, Kevin Denise Hurd, Birmingham; son, Alan Russell Hurd (Lea Ann), Newnan, Ga; grandson, Kyle Lashley; granddaughter, Makaley Hurd; sister, Mary Nan McCullough; cousin, Nancy MacIntosh (Monty) Burgess; sister-in-law, Betty Lu Stephens; nephews, Robert L. McCullough (Shayne), David Sheckells; and niece, Lee McCullough.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Organ Restoration Fund.

Helen Jones Pattillo Stover

 

Helen Jones Pattillo Stover, 68, was born Nov. 4, 1945, in East Tallassee, to the late Isam and Naomi Jones. She passed away July 3, 2014, at Bethany House in Auburn.

She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Opelika, and retired from the banking industry. She served for many years in the Organization of Business and Professional Women and the Pilot Club of Lee County.

Mrs. Stover was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Stover; brothers, James Robert Jones, Willie Marvin Jones, and George Jones; and her sisters, Sally Jones Meadows and Flossie Jones.

She is survived by her daughter, Maria Pattillo Traylor (Phillip) of Opelika; her son, Rusty Pattillo (Pam) of Williamson, Ga.; her brother, Charles Jones (Bonnie) of Cookville, Tenn.; her sister-in-law, Joyce Jones of Tallassee; her grandchildren, Brenton Traylor (Kaitlyn), Justin Traylor, and Noah Traylor; her step-grandchildren, Kevin Hobbs and Michelle Hobbs; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and other family members and friends.

Visitation was held in the parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 8, from 12:30-2:15 p.m. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 8, at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home with Rev. Mike King officiating. Interment followed at Elam Baptist Church Cemetery, Tallassee.
