Wilmer Estes
Simpson

Wilmer Estes Simpson, age 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 6, 2017.
Born to the late Doctor Joseph and Nancy Elizabeth Hornsby Estes on November 10, 1927, in Kent, Alabama, she was the youngest of 6 children.
Wilmer married Lester “Dinky” Simpson on June 1, 1948, and moved to Opelika where she raised her family. She retired from Opelika Manufacturing Company in 1974, and later went to work at Wal-Mart, in Opelika and in Auburn, in various departments, where she retired again in 1990. Then at age 63, she went back to school to train in nursing, her true life’s passion. She became a CNA, providing in-home-health-care in Opelika and Auburn and volunteered with Lee County Hospice. In 2005, Wilmer moved to West Point, Georgia, where she continued her in-home-health-care in West Point and LaGrange. There she also volunteered with Chattahoochee Hospice. Only when her vision failed her, did she retire one last time in 2011. In June of 2015, she moved to Arbor Springs in Opelika where she quickly discovered old friends and made new ones.
While she lived in Opelika, Wilmer was a member of Central Baptist Church and then moved her membership to First Baptist Church of West Point.
Wilmer was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Lester Simpson; 3 sisters, Mary Frances Estes, Helen Estes Cottingham, and Mildred Estes Stobaugh; and 2 brothers, Carthel Estes and Howard Estes.
She is survived by her daughter, Debra Simpson Robertson of West Point, Georgia and her son, Ronald Simpson of Opelika.
A memorial service was held at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home & Crematory at 2:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, June 10, 2017, with Reverend Tom Tucker officiating. Visitation was held one hour prior to the funeral from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. CST.
The family feels sure that Wilmer would have appreciated any charitable gifts be made to Arbor Springs Health and Rehab Center or a Hospice of your choice.
