Our Opelika Chiefs continued their winning ways last week, downing the West Alabama Chargers of Tuscaloosa 45-10. Kyle Caldwell again led the way with four TD passes, completing 15 of 27 attempts for 155 yards but uncharacteristically allowing two interceptions. Kyle also kicked a 20-yard field goal. Mighty Mite 17-year-.old backup QB Raymond Graham had one completion for 17 yards, carried the ball five times for 34 yards and caught four passes for 44 yards.
Chiefs’ offensive player of the game TJ Griffin rushed nine times for 45 yards and a touchdown. Griffin also picked up two 2-point conversions.
TJ and Mike Eiland, who carried 15 times for 67 yards, have effectively filled in for injured Chiefs running backs in recent weeks, including last year’s rushing leader Latrell Jenkins.
Defensive player of the game Sean Smith led the way for the defense with six tackles, a forced fumble, two pass break-ups and one of the Chiefs’ four interceptions for the game. Ladecker Johnson and Isiah Person also contributed to the strong defensive effort that held the Chargers to only 245 yards of total offense, seventy of which came on the first play from scrimmage when the Chiefs’ defender fell down. The Chargers gained only 77 total yards on the ground for the game.
The Chiefs have two regular season games remaining: Saturday, May 13, against the Capital City Cobras in Tallahassee, and back home in Beulah’s Bobcat Stadium for the final game with the Greater New Orleans Jaguars on May 20.
The Prattville Patriots and the Chiefs will probably be ranked one and two in the APDFL rankings this week as the Jaguars knocked off the Georgia Cardinals (previously the league’s only remaining undefeated team) 21-0 last week and the Oklahoma City Bounty Hunters, last year’s league champions, lost for the second time this season.
