Malcolm Clayton Humphries, Sr.
Malcolm Clayton Humphries, Sr., 90, passed away Friday, Jan. 20 at his home after an extended illness.
Visitation was held at 1 p.m., immediately followed by the memorial service at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Jeffcoat Trant Funeral Home, located at 1500 Frederick Rd. in Opelika. Senior Pastor, Reverend Randy Woodham of The First United Methodist Church, Opelika officiated.
Mr. Humphries was born January 25, 1926 in Big Springs Community, LaGrange, Ga. He was the younger of two sons born to William Perry Humphries and Maude Jones Humphries. He married Mary Jane Truett on March 3, 1951. They would have been married 66 years in March of this year.
He is survived by two sons and their families: Clay Humphries and wife, Patricia (deceased) and their children, Clayton and Kathryn; and Bob Humphries and wife, Marla and their daughters, Kirstie and Sydney and grandson Eric.
Mr. Humphries graduated from Opelika High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 – 1946, in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of operation. His brother, Ed Humphries (deceased) served in the U.S. Army in Europe where he was captured in the Battle of the Bulge.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Humphries joined his father in the operation of a well-known local business, Opelika’s Humphries Home and Auto Store, later known as Humphries Appliance. The business, which he ultimately operated with his son Bob and wife Mary Jane, was located at 314 South 8th St. and was in operation for 66 years.
Following retirement, Mr. Humphries remained very active until the last few years, spending much of his time sailing his boat, the High Voltage, on Lake Martin with his many friends in the Still Waters Yacht Club.
