Mayor Gary Fuller and the Opelika City Council honored several Opelika High School students at Tuesday’s meeting for their achievements in Advanced Placement courses.
The following students were recognized and were awarded a certificate:
Joanna Boutdy, Anna Brown, Scot Carpenter, Victoria Drost, Seth Eason, Mallory Fields, J’Arthur Grubbs, Aleah Herring, Logan Joiner, Joelle LeRoy, Will McKee, Owen Meadows, Dylan Munnerlyn, Zach Pelham, Emma Royal , Sam Sharma, Jack Slay, Adriel Vinson, Cidney Woodson, Chris Nguyen and Kevin Lazenby. Lazenby was also recognized for being named a Nation Merit Scholar semi-finalist.
These students have all made qualifying scores on their AP exams and will take courses that can later be used a college credit.
“These students work very, very hard each year to get qualifying scores … We increased our numbers from 74 tests last year to 176 this present year, and I hope our numbers continue to grow,” said Meredith Mitchell, OHS Guidance Counselor/AP Coordinator. “They’re really great kids and I’m extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished.
Fuller praised the students saying Opelika is proud of all they have accomplished and the difference they are making in the community.
In other news, the council:
-approved a request for a temporary street closure for the annual Victorian Front Porch Tour to be held Dec. 12.
-recognized Saturday, Nov. 28 as Small Business Saturday and awarded a signed proclamation to representatives of Opelika Main Street and the Opelika Chamber of Commerce.
